6 Tips on How to Tow a Trailer in Winter Conditions

Driving in winter conditions is no fun for anyone, especially when you are pulling a large load.  Towing a trailer during normal conditions can be challenging enough, let alone on icy and slippery roads.  Here are 6 tips to help you know how to drive a trailer in winter conditions.

First and foremost try avoiding driving in snow and ice if at all possible.  Unfortunately sometimes you don't have a choice so follow these tips if you find yourself in this situation.

1.  Inspect - Perform a thorough inspection of your driving vehicle and your trailer.  Things like oil level, tire pressure, fluids, and wiper blades can all play a part in arriving at your destination safely and not arriving at all.

2. Check your weight - Try to reduce as much weight on your trailer as possible.  The more weight you carry the longer it takes for you to stop.  Go through your inventory and see what you can do without.

3. Tires - tires are the foundation for all the moving, stopping, and accelarating you'll be doing.  Look at your tread and make sure you have sufficient traction.  Use snow tires and or chains when necessary.

4. Slow Down! - If there's anything you learn from this article, let this one be it.  Slow down!  Keep at least 8 seconds between you and the vehicle in front of you.  It may take you longer to get to where you are going but you increase your odds of getting there when you try slow in these conditions.

5. Learn how to brake - When braking or entering curves, brake in a straight line.  Get your vehicle in position before the turn occurs.  This will keep you from jackknifing.

6. Control hills - When driving up a hill try not to apply the brakes at all.  Instead back off your accelarator and keep your momentum if possible.
